Manchester City has officially become the first football club to spend more than €1 billion EUR to gather the players for its squad.

According to recent research conducted by Swiss-based data company CIES Football Observatory, Pep Guardiola‘s club spent precisely €1.014 billion EUR. The study compiles a list of the highest-spending teams in football, with Manchester City at the very top, followed by Paris Saint-Germain (€913M) in second place and Real Madrid (€902M) in third. When narrowing the sample to just the English Premier League, Manchester United came in second with €751M, while Liverpool trailed in closely with €639M. A previous report from Deloitte highlighted that European clubs in the “big five” leagues tallied up over a staggering amount of €5B for just the summer transfer period, another record spend for football that seems to be showing an upward trend over time.
