YoungBoy Never Broke Again has perfected his formula. While he continues to dabble in auto-tuned melodies fitting of his top chart-placements, he’s at his best when his bars are filled with aggression and spite for his enemies. His YouTube videos are evergreen trending moments and his latest release continues that momentum — but in a rather surprising way. On his new track, NBA YoungBoy took No I.D.‘s piano heavy production for JAY-Z‘s instantly iconic “The Story of O.J.” and flipped it in a freestyle dubbed “The Story of YoungBoy.”

At just 21-years-old, YoungBoy already has a young Gucci Mane-esque mythic quality not only because of his ever-growing discography but due in part to his numerous legal issues. His latest studio album TOP scored YoungBoy his third No. 1 Billboard 200 hit. By contrast, he beat a murder charge at 18 but was arrested last month on numerous drug charges with law enforcement seizing over a dozen guns and $79,000 USD in cash. After posting bail, he hit the studio and what resulted was a track where YoungBoy raps so passionately that he can’t be bothered with rhyming on-beat.

He references the Mandela Effect, takes issue with his frequent negative coverage in The Shade Room and champions his own independence in the major label system. “The Shade Room was posting things they don’t understand how I’m living slime/ But they won’t understand how I’m 20 cockin’ over 10 million huh/
I seen labels the new age slavery, so I partnered up I’m a CEO now/ I own a percentage of United Masters tell ’em hate me,” he raps.

YoungBoy has already gone through enough personal drama and has the catalog of an artist twice his age. His “The Story of O.J.” — or rather “The Story of YoungBoy” — shows that he’s aware of the extra baggage, but that he’s willing to branch out in new and unexpected ways to get everything off of his chest.
