After hitting 17 cities across North America, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. pop-up tour heads to Asia. First stop: Tokyo, Japan, at monkey time’s flagship store in Harajuku.
HYPEBEAST Japan had an exclusive look inside the pop-up space ahead of its official opening. monkey time’s clean neutral interior was filled with vibrantly-hued DAMN. merch pieces such as lime green and yellow T-shirts, burgundy hoodies, and a range of streetwear staples in essential black, white and grey colorways.
We also had a chance to catch up with product designer Jide Osifeso at the pop-up to learn a bit more about the DAMN. collection. The DAMN. Tokyo pop-up will take place at monkey time’s Harajuku location from November 18 to 19, then at monkey time’s Osaka store on November 26.
How did this pop up come about?
We wanted to offer the damn stuff to the fans who weren’t able to see the shows, especially people in Asia with the first one being in Tokyo. We’re going to Korea next and China afterwards.
Could you talk about how you came up with the graphics?
It’s all just inspired by the music. The album has so many layers and textures. It’s kinda easy to draw inspiration from Kendrick and there’s so much depth to everything he does. With everyone at TDE, we just collaborated with them on what the merch was going to look like and how we wanted to be represented. It’s an easy process when you have the kind of music that Kendrick makes.
Do you have any favorite pieces?
I really like the “Pray For Me” t-shirt, I think that turned out really awesome. I love the “Nobody Pray For Me” verbiage throughout the album and how it was done. At the live show it really translates because there’s this echo of different people saying “Nobody Pray For Me” between two songs in the set. That’s just really gripping and amazing
What’s your favorite song on the album?
It’s tough. “DNA,” “Element” or “Feel,” those are my favorite songs.
